VGS: Youtube Content I.D.

contentID

By now most of us are aware of Youtube’s flawed content ID system. However the real problem comes in the form of having no way to make real contact with them after a claim or strike has been added to your account.

As proven this week even the big fish can be hit buy this. We found that out after Doug Walker aka the Nostalgia Critic went public on the near destruction of his own account as well as several others that have been all but shut down, or in extreme cases simply deleted from the site.

However this video did hit a major nerve in the Youtube community and thousands of people responded demanding a change from Youtube. The follow up video seen below shows that indeed Youtube did take action, but only in this one case.

However that is a bandaid on the bullet wound that is Youtube’s failed policies. Rather than just fixing this one error they must begin working toward fixing this failed system because if it can hit someone as big of Walker it can hit any of us and us small fish don’t have thousands to back us up.

However this begs the question what can be done? Sure we all say Youtube has to do something but very few people have come forward with workable ideas. Now sure the first and most obvious answer is add a way to contact an actual person and give us more that 220 characters to defend ourselves.

Secondly is instead of auto claiming or auto striking have the content I.D. system mark said videos to be reviewed by actually people. You can’t tell me Youtube can’t afford the extra man power, and in that one swoop you would remove 90% of the complaints the current system has.

This isn’t a new situation but it is one that needs to be sorted and fast. It’s hard enough to make it on Youtube without the constant threat of Youtube’s content I.D. system destroying your channel on a whim.

While people like Doug Walker’s situation may have been resolved hundreds of channels have either been disabled or simple blanked. To echo his own message the thousands of people who were moved by his plight must now be turned toward actually tangible change in the system.
