The Attic: I Know What You Did Last Summer

THE ATTIC

Hello Enthusiacs I am your lord of Shadows and today we delve back into the late 90’s. Back to the end of the old slasher era. Today’s offering comes from 1997 and is based on a book by the same name from Author Lois Duncan. I speak of course about I know what you did Last Summer. The film borrows rather a lot from the Urban legend of the hook.

The story begins in July 1996 when One of our main characters (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) wins an award called the Croaker Queen pageant. To celebrate she and our other leads Ryan Phillippe, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr head out to a nearby island and get fucking hammered.

Cut the ride home where someone ends up in the road and these kids go all crazy taxi on him and yeah he’s dead. Now a smart person would say call the cops tell em what happened. That’s what you do. Instead these guys just hide the body. However while trying to hide the body he revives and logically finding four teenagers trying to dump his body so he flips his shit and attacks them.

So now this is no longer people who just got into a drunken accident and killed someone as a result of being impaired. Now we are watching four murderers. No defending it they straight up murdered a guy. This makes it hard for me to feel bad for these people. They aren’t just poor people who made a mistake. Like we are apparently meant to think.

This takes us a year later and the blood bath begins. Honestly it’s a good slasher flick but too many times do they pull the “I know who the killer is!” and then nope. You can do that a few times but when it’s almost every other scene it just pisses you off as a viewer.

However I really only want to talk about one more scene. and it is the final scene. The killer as far as we know was defeated and we join one of the survivors a year later. As she is entering the shower we see “I still know” written on the door and a figure leaps through it as we cut to black.

Now before their was a sequel it was pretty clear. She just died pretty brutally and that was that. However with the fact that their is a sequel, and this character is in said sequel, and are therefore forced to assume this is a dream.

To be blunt that pisses me off I hate dream reveals and I hate retcons ever more. If you wanted this character to keep going then don’t kill the character! But what irks me about that even more is the fact that you know why she was back for the sequel?

Well in the late 90’s Hewitt was fucking HUGE and teenage boys (myself included) paided big ass cash money to watch her do pretty much anything. That is the reason why the character was brought back. It’s also why the scene of her in the towel made the trailer. They knew we would buy tickets for anything thinking in our adolescent heads we had a shot at finally seeing the twins. Marketing people always know how to get money from idiots and when it comes to the late 90’s a lot of us were idiots.

Until next time I am your lord of Shadows saying

Stay Scared my friends.
