The Attic: Memorial Day

Hello Enthusiacs I am the Lord of Shadow and today we go back to the end of the 1990’s to find a horror movie many people have never seen. Not because of some complex plan to keep it from the public oh no, but because it is a TERRIBLE FUCKING MOVIE that no one should ever be forced to watch.

Ok maybe that was a little harsh, but man is this a bad one. Memorial Day is part of the late 90’s trend where Hollywood tried to recapture the slasher flicks from the 70’s and 80’s. A lot of movies came out either as direct remakes of classic horror and suspense films or as badly cobbled together rip offs. Sadly all of them seem to forget that this was 1999 so standards where higher for new movies than for movies nearly 20 or 30 years old. We forgave movies for bad effects bad lighting ect. We did that because they were the first of their kind. No one had mastered the art yet so no one really knew what was right or wrong. This movie however we know exactly what went wrong.

Let’s start with the villain, who in this movie is basically a carbon copy Jason Voorhees. A totally ripoff with one difference instead of a hockey mask he wear a mask made of paper mache. No I’m not kidding it looks like he was sitting in art class and thought this will work. It completely kills any fear this guy could generate. Could they seriously not afford a mask?

On top of that unlike most other slasher flicks which gives the “monster” an interesting backstory. Here he gets nothing. In fact the big reveal not only kills the movie dead in it’s tracks by the sheer amount of plot wholes it creates but it also is beyond question the worst acting in the film. I won’t give it away assuming someone might actually want to watch it but it is a serious thumbs down against this movie.

Bottom line it’s another supernatural revenge slasher flick but with none of the style of the Friday the 13th series. Even the effects for the most part are completely laughable to the point to where some of the shots in those 70 and 80’s slashing movies look more realistic.

The movie was Directed by Christopher Alender who you might know from literally nothing else. This movie completely killed his directing career and in the 16 years since it came out he made three other projects all of them short. In fact everyone who was involved with the creation of this thing never really recovered.

I think the kindest thing I can say about it is I honestly feel like the people tried. I feel like the acting was the best these people can do. Which is why they didn’t act anymore. I honestly feel bad mocking them as I don’t think it’s their fault the movie is so terrible.

You had a shitty script terrible effects and a director who clearly didn’t know when to say cut and when to do a second take.

Until next time, I am your Lord of Shadows saying…

Stay scared!
