The Attic: The X-Files Returns

Welcome to The Attic, where we still want to believe.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve heard of The X-Files epic, albeit short, return to primetime television. After months of floating rumors, it was finally announced that the return was greenlit, and best of all, that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny were on board. Let’s be honest, without Mulder and Scully, there would be no point. Of course Chris Carter will be at the helm, so this series will still be in good hands. I have also heard that William B. Davis is set to return as everyone’s favorite smoker, based on this interview he did with CTV news.

Now I can’t say that I’m not at all worried, but I am confident. The series had a very great run, but unfortunately it lost a lot of quality with the departure of Duchovny after the end of season 8, but it also lost a bit of its luster after they moved filming from the cloudy, mysterious setting of Vancouver to Los Angeles in the start of season 6. Perhaps the most hopeful news of this new six-episode series is the fact that they will once again film and produce this in Vancouver. That may not seem like a huge deal to most, but ask any X-Phile and they will tell you that the setting of such an eerie series IS important. As odd and disturbing as Los Angeles is, I’d much prefer The X-Files to be less Hollywood weird and more creepy-forest weird, thank you very much.

Now their last experience together was the second feature film in 2008, The X-Files: I Want To Believe, and it also happened to be made in Vancouver but I think it was an unfortunate twist that the story just didn’t have it. I truly think they will fully return to grand form for this series, and will do the beloved characters justice. You can tell how excited both Gillian and David are, as they have both been spotted tweeting the great news. Gillian sent out a tweet on March 24th that read: “Mulder, it’s me. Are you ready?” as a caption to a retweet. David sent one out the very same day, and in classic Duchovny style, it’s hilarious. He posted a picture of them from the first feature film in 1998 with the caption: “It’s been 13 years, hope my suits still fit. #XFilesReunion”

I honestly feel like a little kid again. It’s funny because as much as I grew up loving horror, there was something about this series that I was convinced would scare me. My Dad loved watching it but I would tend to avoid the room when it was on. Even the theme song gave me chills. But in the summer of 1998 that would all change. With the incredibly awesome trailers of the upcoming feature film debut popping up everywhere, one day me, my Mom and brother decided to go see it. I had never seen a single episode, and yet I was enthralled. I was on edge. I was scared of this black oil. I was DYING for Mulder and Scully to kiss. I was wide-eyed from start to finish and their chemistry on screen was riveting. Among government cover-ups of alien existence, exploding buildings and many, many bees… There was such a normal human foundation within the main characters that kept the entire movie grounded. I was in love them and their world.

That summer, me and my family watched nightly marathons on TV thanks to cable television that saw an opportunity in roping in new fans just like us. We watched all five seasons that summer, from the pilot all the way up to the season 5 finale just before 6 was set to premiere. To this day that is by far one of my fondest memories as a youth. This series will always be one of my top three favorites of all time, and something I truly adore above many other things in life. It was one of those once-in-a-generation shows that strikes a chord in millions and sticks with you forever. Yes, I am a die hard X-Phile geek, and I am DAMN proud of that.

We’ve covered Carter, Anderson, Duchovny and Davis, but I have yet to hear exactly who else, if any, of the original series cast are returning for this. Can I just point out that having Walter Skinner (played perfectly by Mitch Pileggi) back would make my life complete? One of my favorite scenes in television history is the one where Assistant Director Skinner goes BADASS on the Cigarette Smoking Man in episode 2 of season 3. If you don’t believe me watch this YouTube video tribute to the character. Feel free to skip ahead to 1:55. Watch, and love. I can’t tell you all enough just how excited I am for this series to return. The truth is still out there, and I can’t wait for more. No official premiere date has been announced yet.

Stay scared,
Dark Princess
