Behind the Line: Nintendo news, and NX speculation

There’s been quite a lot of news about Nintendo since the last time we talked about it, hasn’t there?

Nintendo Direct

This week we had the return of Nintendo Direct, the first since the passing of Satoru Iwata.  It’s good to see that they are continuing this, and it’s not a surprise to see Reggie Fils-Amie as the MC, with a heavy assist from Bill Trinen.  It’s also not a surprise that most of the news is announcements for new offers, and titles.  Stuff like Pokken Tournament.  Gotta say it was nice to hear someone actually pronounce Tekken correctly, Tek-en with an ever so brief pause after the K.

Does anyone else find it really strange to see Mighty No. 9 talked about in the same video that talks about a Mega Man collection?  Having them adjacent like that would any comment just seems wrong somehow.  It feels like a fight between Nick Fury and Dan Turpin.  Sure, they’re both created by the same guy (Jack Kirby), but they’re a DC and a Marvel so there’s a well defined line between them.

Kerbal Space Program is being released on Wii U?  I honestly didn’t see that coming, and I have no idea how well that will translate.  Hope it works out well for the devs, though.

A “Female Link” named Linkle is being added to the 3DS version of Hyrule Warriors.  Interesting, but I was more intrigued when people were theorizing that Link in the next game was a woman.

A more effeminate than usual Link in the teaser got a lot of people wondering.

Everyone’s going nuts with the announcement that Cloud is being added to Smash Bros. and I hope everyone has fun with it.  Personally, and I know I’m in the minority here, I could never stand Cloud.  I unlocked him in Final Fantasy Tactics just to kill him myself.  What I take form this is that Smash Bros. is no longer really the brawl of Nintendo IP, but is becoming more and more the brawl of all video game IP.  It has, or has had, Sonic, Pac-Man, Solid Snake, MegaMan, and now Cloud.  Some developers may hesitate to support Nintendo’s console, but they do seem to be on board with having their IP show up to the Smash Bros. party.

Also, we can play out the Cloud vs Link death battle now!

That’s a lot of stuff that, while not hum drum, wasn’t earth shattering.  Time’s gone on and new titles are announced, nothing unexpected there.  What struck me as the most interesting was what one of the other announcements implies.
