The Attic: New Line Taking On IT Remake

Welcome to The Attic, where you’ll always float too.

The upcoming remake of Stephen King’s IT will now be placed in the loving hands of New Line. This is fantastic, and very reassuring news. When you think of horror film companies, you think of the “House that Freddy Built.” WB has been working on getting the ball rolling on a remake for about 5 years, however this shift to its subsidiary will no doubt get that ball rolling a hell of a lot faster. New Line was folded into WB in 2008, and is now moving to their lot in June of this year. They’re clearly making it known that the horror films at WB will be passed to the appropriate people. WB had reportedly placed Cary Fukunaga (HBO’s True Detective) as director and Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg as producers. The only question is, will this shift in companies change any of that? We’ll find out soon, I’m sure.

Stephen King’s IT was originally made as a two-part miniseries in 1990, starring Tim Curry who brilliantly played the highly disturbing Pennywise. It also starred John Ritter, Annette O’Toole, Jonathan Brandis, Seth Green and many others. The story is set around a group of outcast kids that are terrorized by a clown who appears anywhere and everywhere, twisting their reality around them until they don’t know what’s real and what isn’t. The kids band together to try and fight this evil off, and they think they do, leaving it all behind and going their separate ways. That is, until a sudden development in their adult lives bring them back together to once again face this terror head-on.

I don’t know about you all, but I very vividly remember watching this as a child, and being so freaked out by that ominous, smiling clown that I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I saw his face. It kept me awake for hours, and that is a mark of a film that truly made an impact. That is a beautiful thing. I for one, am very excited for this. Yes it’s a remake, but we are talking about a BIG SCREEN remake. This means looser reigns than a network miniseries will ever have. It has been reported that they plan on once again breaking the story up into two parts. With the first focusing on their childhood encounters with Pennywise, and trying to fight back. The second will focus more on them as adults, accepting a much-dreaded and very urgent reunion, and facing the childhood they all tried desperately to forget.

My biggest concern will be who can take the lead. It’s one thing to find a big guy that can walk around slowly with a knife and mask or a chainsaw and a second-hand face. It’s another thing to fill the giant shoes that Curry left behind for Pennywise the clown (no pun intended). This story relies completely on that character to carry the fear-load, and if they don’t get the right man for the job it could all fall apart. IT can’t be too serious, too silly, too charismatic or too stoic… it’s all a fine line and needs to be walked carefully. I have to say though, that after being blown away by the perfect casting of the new Freddy in New Line’s remake of Nightmare on Elm Street my confidence is pretty high.

I’ll keep you all updated as more news, casting info, and a release date are announced.

Can’t wait? Need MOAR CLOWNS now?? I offer you this video. I would also like to mention that the “prank” that starts right at the 1:00 mark almost made me wet myself. Yes it’s a prank, and it’s really fucking scary at the same time. You’re welcome.

Stay scared,
Dark Princess

I dont know. Tim Curry defined the role of clown, while it will be interesting to see how the new one will approach it, still is a huge task. They cant avoid comparisons with the TV series and i wonder if this remake is a good move.
