The Attic: Wishmaster

Hello Enthusiacs I am your Lord of Shadows and today we go back to the late 90’s with a nostalgic classic that is Wishmaster.

The story opens with a proverb basically spelling out the plot of the movie. When a Djinn is awakened he will offer the one who wakes him three wishes, however these wishes come with a price. Should a Djinn grant all three wishes it will unseal his realm sending an army of darkness upon the Earth enslaving all of mankind.

So yeah bad times for everyone. We open in Persia many years ago where the djinn has been released. Here we enjoy a massive influx of horror tropes. Persia has basically become hell with all manor of ghouls and creatures coming to life from the bodies of the victims. The Djinn is about to win with the king making his third wish when the court wizard seals him into a jewel.

Cut to “the present” aka 1997 where we see Freddy Krueger himself Robert Englund is buying the statue containing the Djinn and our story begins.

I don’t want to give anymore of the plot away. So where just going to talk about things in the film rather than the film itself.

The Djinn himself is remarkably creepy and incredibly well designed being both man and monster. He lures his victims into damning themselves. Turning their own greed and desires into the instruments of their doom.

On top of that the art that went into him and his lair are staggering in design. Giving the idea of hell while at the same time being original enough to feel like effort went into it.

Add to that the sheer amount of Horror cameos from dozens of other horrors films including Kane Hodder and Tony Todd. These were intended to be “passing the torch” moments signifying the Wishmaster as the new Horror icon. Sadly it’s sequels ruined any idea of that.

Finally while the effect are a bit dated by today’s standard they hold up far better than many other iconic horror classics.

Bottom line if you have not seen this film do yourself a favor and check out the Wishmaster.
