Welcome to the America of the future, or at least that’s what this movie would have you believe. The Purge tells the story of a world in which once a year for 12 hours everything is legal. Now I’ll say this as a horror movie concept the films write themselves, and that is the direction the sequels to this film take. However here we are treated to a “very serious” look at this as if the purge could or would ever happen in our world and it is that bizarre tone that really just kinda takes you out of the moment as it is treat way too seriously and thus doesn’t allow you to suspend disbelieve nearly as easily and a film the the Purge needs you to.
