Hello and welcome to Episode 2 of VG Spoils DragonBall. Last time we jumped into the first episode which saw Goku and Bulma meeting each other and deciding to go out of a grand adventure to locate the seven DragonBalls. This episode picks up right where it left off so let’s dive in.

Episode 2: The Emperors Quest

We join Goku and Bulma pretty close to sunset on their first day of travel. The narrator reintoduces the story much in the same way I did above. Goku thinks it’s about time to stop and Bulma is inclined to agree. However while Goku is looking for a place to lay sleeping bags Bulma has a better idea. Goku is horrified when Bulma pulls out another capsule this is one containing a house inside.

Goku still believes the capsules are a form of black magic and is very hesitant to walk inside. Once he does he learns about electricity and television two things he had never seen before. He believes the man he sees in the screen of the television is actually a trapped soul Bulma has captured. However once she explains it to him he seems to enjoy it. Bulam delights in educating the boy and soon he is clearly getting use to the idea of technology even if he doesn’t truly understand it yet.

This leads to a new problem as now that they are inside Bulma notices to stink she believed to be the outside has followed them inside. She ask Goku when is the last time he had a bath and as he doesn’t know what that is she assumes it’s been a while. She tries to explain to him how to take a bath but as he is about as bright as a dim x-mas bulb she figures she’ll have to show him how it’s done.

This leads to one of the funnier gags in the episode as she becomes increasing frustrated by not only his lack of modesty but by the fact that his tail won’t come off.

She believes it was something he was wearing until he begins to move it. This leads to her wondering if all men have tails, while Goku explains that his grandfather didn’t have one so many it’s just him with the tail.

This tail mystery won’t be solved for a very long time.

Once he has his bath Bulma cleans out the tub and draws herself a bath which is then interrupted by Goku who believes he needs to help Bulma bathe as she doesn’t have a tail. Bulma of course is very uncomfortable with Goku watching her in the tub so she kicks him out tossing just about everything in the bathroom at him.

So Goku, confused as ever, waits for Bulma to finish before they can get something to eat.

Taking a break from their story we rejoin Emperor Pilaf eating himself when Shu enters the room. Pilaf begins drilling him on why he hasn’t found a dragonball yet. When Shu doesn’t answer it leads Pilaf to begin monologuing about his plans to use the dragonballs to, what else, take over the world.

This leads to a running joke with Pilaf as mid laugh he cracks a fart. It’s about as funny here as it was in the Master of Disguise, however this is when it gets very dark very quickly. When Shu tells him he knows what he did Pilaf goes batshit insane activating a torture device to hold Shu in place while fetching a chainsaw to cut him into pieces.

I’m not sure if this is meant to be funny or not but it really just comes across as seriously whacked seeing as these villains are mostly used as I said last time for comedic effect.

Mai comes in to save poor Shu reporting that one of their operatives believes they have spotted a dragonball in the bone valley. Pilaf now in a much better mood releases Shu and sends both he and Mai to investigate the report and bring him the dragonball.

Back with Goku and Bulma we see that Goku is not a huge fan of Bulma’s choice in food. Bread, cheese, and coffee are clearly not his cup of tea so he goes hunting for better grub against Bulma’s wishes. This leads to the first time our heros and villains meet one another as Goku confuses Mai and Shu’s ship for a giant bird.

Goku believes the pair are after the same bird he is however before a fight can break out between them the both of them are attacked by red eyed wolves. Shu and Mai simply run back to their ship terrified while Goku begins to fight them hand to hand. He stops fighting when he sees the ship leaving and using his trusty power pole he crashes the plan with Shu and Mai inside.

Dumb luck and Mai’s belt keep the pair alive while Goku examines his kill. However as it’s made of metal he is out of luck.

He returns to Bulma with a wolf corpse for them to split but she is disgusted and makes him eat it outside. This leads to a lesson on toothbrushing and we learn a little more about Goku’s past.

He explains to Bulma that he doesn’t know who his parents are as his grandfather found him in the woods while he was still an infant. Bulma seems saddened by this but the show jumps right to the next morning when Goku woke up.

He lays down but something about Bulma isn’t right compared to his grandfather. A quick investigation leads him to scream in horror that Bulma has no balls. She believes he means dragonballs and leaps awake to check them. Goku decides this must be normal for a girl and lets it go. This gag pays off next episode.

He goes outside tired of waiting for Bulma to get her hair done and finds a giant turtle which he thinks is Bulma as he told her earlier she was so slow she would turn into one. The turtle ask for help getting back to the sea because he’s been lost for a year. Goku offers to take him and Bulma disagrees as she wants to keep going for the dragonballs this leads to the two splitting up Goku taking the turtle and Bulma looking for the dragonballs.

Which last about 30 seconds before Bulma terrified of what she might find alone quickly packs up and follows behind him on her motocycle not even changing out of her pj’s. This ends the episode with the two on the way to the sea.

This episode was basically there to help flesh out Goku by teaching us what he can do as well as dropping a few hints as to his secret origin which ironically won’t be cleared up until the next series dragon ball z
