6 Game Franchises That Need Reboots/Sequels

reboot

Sequelitis everyone!

I’ve already mentioned how I feel about sequels and remakes in the video game industry. If you missed it, click here! I think we can do without a lot of the fluff, and get to the games that provide hours of enjoyment. However, there are a few franchises that have either fallen flat or just disappeared. These are franchises that I actually enjoyed, but through some form of sequelitis or just a lack of funding, they haven’t made an appearance or haven’t had a good game in a while.

I was initially going to do a Top 5, but I had a hard time deciding on a particular game, so I added it anyway. I’ll let you guys decided which one it is! In the meantime, my list begins with:

6. Spyro

reboot

Can we agree that this dragon is cool?

Maybe it’s just the kid in me that remembers loving the cheesy adventures of Spyro the Dragon and his dragonfly friend, Sparks. Insomniac Games brought me hours of enjoyment with this franchise, and I wish they would bring it back. Sypro however was rebooted in 2006 by Activision, and but sadly the three games were mediocre at best.

I know that Spyro is a playable character in the Skylanders game, but I’m not interested in that particular cash cow. I want Activision to consult with some of the guys from Insomniac Games and make a GOOD Spyro game. That dragon, along with Crash Bandicoot, provided me with some great times on the original Playstation. This isn’t as urgent as some of the other games on this list because I know that Activision is busy raking in the cash with Skylanders. However, it would be nice to at least see the original Spyro series re-mastered for today’s consoles.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Mr. Tuitt talk about Vanquish, let alone the kind of praise that warrants another game. I’ll have to check it out. I also saw the game Naughty Bear at 2nd and Charles for dirt cheap and thought it looked like a game with some fun. stange, and dark humor. I hope it’s still there.

I played the original Darksiders and found it enjoyable, but there wasn’t much in terms of gameplay that really made me want to play through it again or pick up the sequel. Not a bad game at all, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Always worth a second chance I suppose.

Crash Bandicoot and Spyro could be fun reboots and introduce a new generation of gamers to the characters that we grew up with.

The rest I can not speak to unfortunately. My own personal list is listed below:

    – RESIDENT FUCKING EVIL, PLEASE REBOOT IT!!! RE 5 and 6 weren’t bad games, just bad RE games. RE 4 was a good game, it just didn’t feel like an RE title, especially the plot. And no, I’m not saying it was to have fixed cameras to be an RE title.

    – DMC: Devil May Cry 2. I know this will never happen because it seems the majority of players hated the reboot, seemingly on the main character’s appearance only, so Capcom won’t go for it. The reboot had the best combat controls of any in the series and I quite enjoyed experiencing the origin story of how the two sons of Sparda came to be and the eventual despise for one another. I know I’m in the minority on this one.

    – Dino Crisis. Come on Capcom, you are sitting on Gold with all of the franchises that new and old players could enjoy (I know people want Megaman, that’s why there’s an indirect kickstarter reboot). The first and 2nd games were awesome. Hell, even the third game was still fun, albeit the ludicrous story and the fact that it had nothing to do with the MAJOR cliff hanger at the end of the second game but still called itself Dino Crisis 3.

    – Spyhunter. The 3ds and vita game that came out recently was a complete joke. The remakes of the franchise in the early 2000s were just plain fun and I would like to see that style of game return.

    – Twisted Metal. I never got to play the PS3 all-online game that came out, but I enjoyed the campaigns of the games and the accompanying twisted stories behind the characters/cars. Not to mention they were just fun.

    – Einhander

All I can say about Naughty Bear is that it looks like one thing, but it’s repetitive, clunky, and boring. I was so disappointed with that purchase and the guys at the store thankfully gave me my money back.

There was no dark humor. It wasn’t even close to funny! Come on!

I also played Vanquish, it’s actually a really good and interesting game. It’s future tech, but not in a sense of far far future somehow despite the fact that you have guns materialising out of nowhere, spaceships and major space habitats.

I had a lot of fun with it, but it doesn’t seem to have built up any major community around it, nor was it terribly popular so I don’t think we’ll see a sequel. A shame really, it’s a good game.
