The Attic: Howling 2: Stirba Werewolf Bitch

Hello Enthusiacs I am your Lord of Shadows and today we are going back a long ways to 1985. Many of you may have seen the Howling, it’s an absolute classic. Howling 2 on the other hand well. This is the only sequel that directly follows the original.

The movie actually starts with the brother of Dee Wallace’s character play by the greatest American Hero Reb Brown. He is one of the only things that makes this movie remotely watchable. Enter legendary actor Christopher Lee as a Werewolf hunter who has come to tell Reb his sister in not truly dead.

This leads to me talking about the title because the American title was Howling 2: Your sister is a werewolf. I much prefer the UK title as you can see Stirba Werewolf Bitch.

Anyway once Reb finds Lee having dug up his sister he goes all Reb Brown on the corpse and now our action movie is on as Reb and Lee go to Transylvania to fight the Werewolves. Featuring Christopher Lee in one of the most bizarre outfits he has ever worn. seriously look at this.

howling2_shot2lThis leads to the reveal of the Werewolf Queen Stirba played by Sybil Danning. This is also where the biggest problem in the movie comes in. This is a vampire movie with Werewolves put in the play. It’s been said that it’s like they did a find replace and put werewolf everywhere it said Vampire. Seriously they are based in Transylvania, it takes a stake through the heart to kill them, ect.

Sybil arriving on the scene completely changes the tone of the movie. Up till then the movie had been fairly serious. Christopher Lee added a large amount of credibility that is completely ruined by this hard right turn into camp.

Nothing wrong with camp, but it just feels so out of nowhere. You will swear she is here for two reasons. Righty and Lefty. No I’m serious watch the credits if you don’t believe me.

From here on out the movie is just a shoot em up movie with no style or substance. The only good thing in the rest of the movie is Christopher Lee’s straight man routine as a backdrop to the crazy.

As you might have been able to tell this movie pales in comparison to the original. Christopher Lee was so ashamed of this film that years later he told the director of the first he was sorry he had been a part of this thing. On set he was so saddened by the quality of acting of Reb he found reasons not to be on set unless he was needed.

That’s how bad it is people. Christopher Lee played the Villain in “Captain America 2: Death too Soon” and this is the movie that made him ashamed.

Stayed Scared Enthusiacs the Lord shall return.
